Analysis: Stablecoin Cross-Border Payment Costs Dip Below Interbank Exchange Rates, with Routing Selection Becoming the Largest Cost Variable

According to Borderless' Q2 2026 Stablecoin Payment Benchmark Report, stablecoin cross-border payment prices remained below interbank foreign exchange rates for three consecutive months in the second quarter, indicating that the cost of on-chain USD settlement is further converging with, and even surpassing, the traditional financial system. Based on data analysis from 108 countries and 260 payment corridors, the report shows that the median "Parity Gap" (the difference between the stablecoin delivery price and the interbank exchange rate) for stablecoin payments in Q2 was negative 3.2 basis points (bps). In June, this metric reached its lowest level this year at negative 5.9 bps, meaning the overall delivery price for stablecoin cross-border transfers was lower than the interbank market mid-rate.Borderless stated that achieving a final delivery price below the interbank exchange rate is quite rare for any cross-border payment mechanism. This data reflects the actual cost paid by customers, including fees, rather than the pure foreign exchange execution price. The report points out that the "transfer cost" for stablecoin payments is becoming commoditized. In Q2, the average cost of transferring $10,000 via mainstream corridors was approximately $27, and has remained near this level for five consecutive months. As competition among different service providers intensifies, the lowest quoted price changes continuously, but market prices are gradually stabilizing. As payment costs converge, the choice of service provider becomes the new core cost factor. Borderless refers to this phenomenon as the "Routing Tax": if a company relies on a single payment service provider over the long term, its costs may be higher than the optimal market price. Data shows that for every $1 million in funds transferred, choosing a single provider compared to the optimal route could result in an additional cost of approximately $2,330. (The Block)

Ethereum’s New Proposal: Validators May Need to Contribute Up to 10% of Staking Rewards to Fund the Ecosystem

According to CoinDesk, the Ethereum Research Forum has released a new proposal introducing a “Validator Redirection Yield” mechanism, allowing validators to redirect 0% to 10% of their staking rewards toward funding ecosystem infrastructure and public goods. If a majority of validators support a specific redirection percentage, that percentage will become mandatory for all validators. Based on current staking levels, a 5% to 10% redirection would generate approximately 50,000 to 70,000 ETH annually for the ecosystem—roughly $120 million. The proposal aims to address Ethereum’s long-standing “free-rider” problem; however, it has also raised external concerns regarding risks such as coordinated validator manipulation of fund allocation and misaligned interests between staking operators and ETH holders. The proposal remains under discussion and has not yet entered the formal voting process.

The Bank of Japan decided to suspend its tapering of bond purchases starting from July next year.

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) stated that, at today’s monetary policy meeting, the BOJ’s Policy Board reviewed developments and operations in the Japanese government bond (JGB) market and discussed future guidelines for JGB purchases. In principle, long-term interest rates should be determined by financial markets; therefore, it is appropriate for the central bank to conduct JGB purchases in a predictable manner while retaining sufficient flexibility to support JGB market stability. Based on this approach, and to improve the efficiency and stability of the JGB market, the BOJ decided—by a vote of 7 to 1—to implement the following measures: Starting now through March 2027, the BOJ will reduce its monthly JGB purchase target by approximately ¥200 billion per natural quarter, in principle. From April 2027 onward, its monthly JGB purchase target will be maintained at approximately ¥2 trillion. Should long-term interest rates rise rapidly, the BOJ will respond flexibly—for example, by increasing the scale of JGB purchases or conducting fixed-rate JGB purchase operations (both of which are exempt from the monthly JGB purchase target), as well as conducting funding operations against pooled collateral. Furthermore, the BOJ will no longer conduct mid-term reviews of its direct JGB purchase program. However, the BOJ stands ready to adjust the pace of JGB purchases at future monetary policy meetings, as deemed necessary, based on the fundamental principles guiding JGB purchases and other factors—including developments in the JGB market.
