UK AI Firms Warn Government Has Only 12-Month Window to Resolve Data Center Protests

Source: www.theguardian.com
According to The Guardian, the Sovereign AI Leadership (SAIL) working group, comprising companies such as Nvidia, Microsoft, and Cisco, has submitted recommendations to the UK government stating that Britain has approximately 12 months to address public opposition to data centers; otherwise, a wave of protests similar to those in the United States could emerge, threatening project construction. The working group noted that successive dry summers and rising energy bills are intensifying public concern over data centers. SAIL urges the government to establish a "community prosperity compact," providing a unified framework for local authorities and mayors to outline local benefit provisions for data centers, including setting financial or infrastructure contributions based on project scale, and allowing host local councils to retain a greater share of tax revenue. Microsoft previously pledged to invest $30 billion in UK AI infrastructure and has already constructed a data center in Acton, London, with a project in Newport currently under construction.
