Sveriges Riksbank calls for reassessing the e-krona, warning that stablecoins and the digital euro could undermine the domestic currency's payment status.

According to CoinDesk, the Swedish central bank is urging lawmakers to reassess the necessity of issuing an e-krona, warning that the continued development of foreign-currency stablecoins and the digital euro could place long-term pressure on the use of the Swedish krona in the payments ecosystem. Swedish central bank Deputy Governor Per Jansson stated that if cash becomes increasingly digital while the krona lacks a convenient digital form, the domestic currency may struggle to compete with cross-border digital payment tools. While the central bank has not yet decided whether to officially issue the e-krona, it hopes that preparatory steps will be initiated at the legislative level as soon as possible, as the associated regulatory and technical work is expected to take at least five years.
