Hong Kong Investment Fraud Cases Involve HK$1.65 Billion in First Half of the Year

According to Ming Pao, the Hong Kong Police announced that Hong Kong recorded a total of 20,613 fraud cases in the first half of 2026, involving losses of approximately HK$3.5 billion. Among these, there were 2,151 investment fraud cases, accounting for about one-tenth of the total cases, involving losses of approximately HK$1.65 billion. The case with the highest single loss involved cryptocurrency; the victim transferred crypto assets worth approximately HK$84.79 million to digital wallets designated by the scammers in stages, and eventually discovered the fraud when unable to withdraw the so-called investment returns. The Hong Kong Police also updated the progress of the JPEX case; currently, reports from approximately 2,800 victims have been received, involving amounts exceeding HK$1.6 billion; since 2023, a total of 81 people have been arrested, of whom 29 have been charged, involving charges such as conspiracy to defraud, money laundering, and perverting the course of justice.
